Berhalter appointed United States head coach

Gregg Berhalter has been appointed as the United States new head coach after months of speculation.

USA had been without a permanent boss since October 2017 when Bruce Arena quit after failing to guide the team to the 2018 World Cup, the States missing the finals for the first time since 1986.

Dave Sarachan had taken charge of a series of friendlies in the meantime as US Soccer delayed making a decision on an appointment, with his contract up at the end of the year following friendly defeats to England and Italy last month.

And Berhalter has belatedly been confirmed as the new man, as expected, leaving Columbus Crew in MLS after five years.

He becomes the first USA coach to have represented the country as a player at a World Cup, collecting 44 caps as he…

Haaland is a great player, but this squad got me to a Champions League final – Ancelotti

Erling Haaland is a great player who is joining a great club in Manchester City, but Carlo Ancelotti suggested he is not overly upset at missing out on the much-coveted striker.

City confirmed on Tuesday they have reached an agreement to sign Haaland, who had been linked with an array of clubs across Europe – Ancelotti s Real Madrid among them.

Haaland s 85 goals in 88 games since joining Dortmund in January 2020 is bettered only by Robert Lewandowski (122) and Kylian Mbappe (89) across Europe s top five leagues.

But Madrid already boast a prolific striker of their own in Karim Benzema, whose 57 direct goal involvements in all competitions is unmatched in the continent s major divisions.

While Ancelotti has made no secret that he is a fan of Haaland, he…

Guardiola lauds ´remarkable´ Man City after FA Cup quarter-final triumph

Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City s form over the past four months is one of the greatest achievements  since he joined the club in 2016.

City claimed a 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday to reach the FA Cup semi-finals for the third season in succession – the first time they have achieved the feat since between 1931-32 and 1933-34.

The result marked a new club record of 17 consecutive away matches unbeaten, breaking the record previously set between January and September in 1999.

Since City s defeat to Tottenham on November 21, they have won 29 of their 33 matches across all competitions, losing just once – to neighbours Manchester United in the Premier League earlier this month.

And Guardiola attributed his side s stunni…

Guardiola not expecting any more Manchester City signings

Manchester City are unlikely to bring in more new signings ahead of Thursday s transfer deadline, according to manager Pep Guardiola.

The Premier League champions only major acquisition of the close-season so far came when Riyad Mahrez joined for a club-record £60million from Leicester City last month.

Another specialist holding midfield option alongside Fernandinho was also a priority but City s pursuit of Jorginho ended with the Italy international moving to Chelsea from Napoli.

Jorginho struggled in the Chelsea side that City swept aside 2-0 thanks to a Sergio Aguero brace during Sunday s Community Shield and, after the match, Guardiola hinted his club might be closing in on a new signing.

But he sounded a different tone at Sky Sports Premier League l…

Shaw to miss FA Cup semi-final

Manchester United will be without Luke Shaw for Sunday s FA Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea at Wembley.

The full-back twisted his ankle during the 2-2 Premier League draw with Southampton at Old Trafford and sat out the 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Thursday.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not expect Shaw to be ready to face Frank Lampard s side, but there is better news for Brandon Williams, who sustained a worrying head injury against the Saints and also missed the game at Selhurst Park, having suffered heavy bruising around his left eye.

Luke will be out, Solskjaer said on Saturday. I can t see him recovering.

Brandon will hopefully be okay. He ll try to join in training today with his eye. We ll see if he can see the ball when he comes in! He s…

Cannavaro quits as China coach after two games

Out of respect for the country that has been hosting me for some years, I feel the duty to communicate that I have renounced my position as head coach of the Chinese National Football Team, Cannavaro wrote via Instagram.

I wish to sincerely thank Guangzhou Evergrande Football Club and the Chinese Football Association for having offered me the position of the head coach of the two most important football teams in the country, however this double assignment would take me away from my family for too long.

More than one month ago I informed my club about my intention to dedicate myself exclusively to my squad and my players. By maintaining only the position as head coach of Guangzhou Evergrande, I hope to contribute to the growth of young Chinese football players, working…

Pogba can´t help Man United win on his own – Deschamps

Didier Deschamps insisted Paul Pogba cannot win games for Manchester United on his own as the France head coach defended the star midfielder and his leadership qualities.

Pogba helped France to World Cup glory in Russia but he has struggled to replicate that form at United in the Premier League amid a tense relationship with manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho stripped Pogba – who was substituted in Saturday s shock defeat to West Ham – of his vice-captaincy responsibilities, while the pair were involved in a training-ground confrontation on Wednesday.

Asked about Pogba s performances for France compared to his displays at United, Deschamps said: For Paul it depends not only on him but also the team he is in, the collective way of playing. It is not a case of one…

Man Utd signing Malacia outlines plans to displace Shaw as Ten Hag´s first-choice left-back

New Manchester United signing Tyrell Malacia has set his sights on dislodging Luke Shaw as Erik ten Hag s first-choice left-back.

Malacia became the long-awaited first signing of the Ten Hag era, joining from Feyenoord for a reported upfront fee of £13million (€15.1m), with £2m in add-ons.

The 22-year-old is expected to pose an attacking threat down the left flank, having laid on four assists in the 2021-22 season, while his 6.0 expected assists (xA) was bettered by only four Eredivisie defenders.

Shaw, Alex Telles, Diogo Dalot and Brandon Williams are among the other left-back options for United, who opened their pre-season campaign with a 4-0 thumping of Liverpool in Bangkok on Tuesday.

Malacia appeared as part of Ten Hag s second-half team, with …

Anderlecht in talks with Southampton defender Wesley Hoedt

Anderlecht are interested in signing Wesley Hoedt from Southampton in the summer transfer window, according to . It has been reported that the Belgian club are in talks with the defender over signing him on loan for the 2020-21 campaign.

Hoedt has been on the books of Southampton since the summer of 2017 when he joined from Italian club Lazio. Much was expected of the 26-year-old when he arrived at St. Mary’s Stadium, but things have not gone according to plan for him.

Hoedt was on loan at Celta de Vigo in 2019 and spent the 2019-20 campaign on loan at Royal Antwerp. The Netherlands international defender did relatively well in Belgium, and it seems that he could be on his way back there. Anderlecht are a big club in Belgium and will be aiming for the title next seaso…

Gonzalez started his professional career with Argentine side Argentinos Juniors, where he earned promotion to the first team in 2016 and moved to the Mercedes-Benz Arena two years later. Since then, he s gone on to represent the German club on 79 occasions in all competitions, scoring 23 goals and producing 10 assists.
